Traffic
I saw some dragonflies on the highway today as traffic slowed and wondered what it must be like for them to watch us on our hurried ways. Encased as we are in steel beetle shells heaving ourselves through space on the backs of iron horses bridled in the fuel of long dead dinosaurs.
We are no doubt an odd sight. One that the aged dragonflies must squint at incredulously. Wondering if all of this frenzied blur of motion is simply a strange mirage born of the brisk midday summer heat and the small timeworn cracks beginning to form in their weary minds.
Are we a cautionary tale? The ones they warn their children about? Bearers of noise and dust and deadly glass-faced wheeled scarabs capable of carrying you away from this world in an instant? What must we look like to their deep shifting prism eyes? A dream or a nightmare?
I wonder as they dart at odd angles through the sluggish traffic just beyond my windshield.
