The sunset tonight looked as though someone had carefully shaded grids of little arcing lines across the shimmering watercolor of the sky. I could very nearly see their small pile of pencil shavings and the dark smudgy of graphite down the side of their drawing hand. I stood still at the top of the hill in the park among the new spring grass and the earnest field daisies and waited until the darkness consumed them all. Just after dusk the slate is slowly wiped clean awaiting the arrival of silent stars and I am reminded that this, like every other moment, is a perfect world onto itself. The pencil shavings of father time are scattered on the floor of some universal studio now shut down for the night until he returns to remind us that we are alive.
